The Rotary Club of Ulaanbaatar Peace Avenue collaborated with the Rotary Club of Taipei Songren, Ulaanbaatar, Tamir, and Urgoo made a significant contribution to the Mongolian eye health care sector and successfully implemented the Global Grant project worth US$68,000 in 2018-2019. We screened over 80% of patients in ten provinces (almost half Mongolia’s provinces), diagnosed people with diabetes mellitus, and provided treatment for 29 patients as well as surgery for eight patients free of charge for those with retinopathy. We established a low vision cabinet at the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences (MNUMS). We brought a vocational training team from District 3522 in Mongolia to carry out three different training to the ophthalmologists, family physicians, and nurses working with visually impaired people and family members of visually impaired people.
The early stages of diabetic retinopathy usually don’t have any symptoms; however, early detection, accurate diagnosis, and timely treatment can reduce the impact of vision loss. Therefore we aimed to screen all registered patients with diabetic mellites in ten provinces and provide the necessary treatment as well as surgery for those with retinopathy; and establish a Low Vision Cabinet where visually-impaired people can receive rehabilitation services such as the development of independent living skills and orientation and mobility skills.
